The UGANDA LANDMINE SURVIVORS ASSOCIATION (ULSA) was established in April 2005 as the National organization for landmine survivors throughout Uganda. ULSA is a non-governmental organization, focused primarily on advocacy and victim assistance, and is incorporated as a body corporate with perpetual succession. Its membership is derived from all landmine survivor groups in Uganda and other like minded NGOs and stakeholders whose mandate include addressing landmine related issues, support to landmine survivors and other persons with disabilities.

Vision:
ULSA’s vision is of empowered survivors of landmine, cluster munitions and other explosive remnants who can attain better living conditions and are able to advocate for themselves at all levels.

Mission:
To spearhead campaign against landmines, cluster munitions and explosive remnants of war (ERWs) while championing advocacy for better support for landmines survivors in Uganda.

Objectives:
The specific objectives of ULSA are:

• To build the capacity of landmine survivors groups in the country through Psychosocial Support and Leadership training.

• To raise awareness on the Mine Ban Treaty and its tenets, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and gather support for the emerging Cluster Munitions Convention.

• To establish peer to peer support network among survivors and other persons with disabilities

• To collect and disseminate information related to landmines, cluster munitions and explosive remnants of war (EWR) to survivors and the general public.

• To organize fora between coalitions working against landmines, cluster munitions and explosive remnants of war (EWR) survivors. stakeholders and government.

Mode of Operations:

The national survivors association (ULSA) worked with the UNDP Technical Advisor on Victim Assistance who is based at the Mine Action Centre. Other national partners include National Union of Disabled Persons in Uganda (NUDIPU), the National Council for Disability as well as the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. ULSA also works with the mine affected communities to improve the lives of landmine survivors as well as those who have been affected in by the devastating effects of antipersonnel mines.

Network through the International Campaign to Ban Landmine (ICBL) as well as the Cluster Munitions Coalition and its various country campaigns, survivor organizations, government ministries, INGOs and NGOs implementing Victim Assistance programs and other organizations whose mandate include support to landmine survivors and people with disabilities.
